India’s top car companies, Tata Motors and Mahindra, are launching new electric cars. This year, there will be seven new EV launches. Tata Motors has five planned, and Mahindra has two. These new vehicle launches are a big step for the country.
Tata Sierra EV
The recent return of the Sierra nameplate was a masterclass in brand power. Offering three internal combustion engine (ICE) options, the public response was massive, with over seventy thousand (70,000) bookings in just twenty-four (24) hours. Seeing that, it was clear Tata Motors had a winner. Now, they’re smartly capitalising on that exact momentum. The logical next step? A launch of an EV version. It’s a confident move to transform a proven hit into a flagship for the electric future.

It’s smart engineering. The Sierra EV for India will be built on Tata’s modern ARGOS platform. This isn’t just for EVs; it’s a versatile, modular architecture designed to support different powertrains like combustion and hybrid too. My take? This flexibility is key for cost and speed. The setup from day one will be a dual-motor AWD (All Wheel Drive), which is a big deal. We saw the demand for AWD electrlc SUVs with the Harrier.EV in its segment. The Sierra.EV, sitting in a lower segment, is clearly following a proven and popular trend.
From what we can see, the Sierra.EV will have a design to differentiate it from its ICE counterpart, with a closed-off front grille and special aero-optimized alloy wheels. Inside, the layout and cabin will likely resemble the regular Sierra, though the choice of colours and trims may vary. On the technical side, Tata Motors hasn’t officially revealed the powertrain details or battery sizes, but it’s likely two battery packs will be offered: a 55kWh unit (the former possibly from the Curvv.EV) and a 65kWh pack (the latter borrowed from the bigger Harrier.EV).

Tata Punch EV Facelift
The Tata Punch EV has been a strong performer in the compact e-SUV segment. Following the recently refreshed ICE Punch with its updated styling and new features, a Punch EV facelift is expected soon. In my view, this is about keeping a winner fresh. The core specs like battery capacity (25 kWh and 35 kWh options) and motors will likely remain the same. The focus will be to bring fresh cosmetic updates and an improved equipment list to this popular nameplate.
Tata Avinya
Tata is taking a bold step with the Avinya. This won’t be another mainstream SUV; it’s positioned as a premium luxury electric offering. In fact, it’s not a single model but a family of EVs—a whole series that will include various bodystyles and sizes.

The Avinya X, showcased at the Bharat Mobility Expo 2025, already won wide acclaim. Its launch is set for the end of this year. Built on a cutting-edge, third-generation skateboard platform (a localised derivative of Jaguar Land Rover’s EMA architecture), the Avinya range is designed to be the Indian carmaker’s new EV flagship. Notably, it will not have any ICE counterparts, marking a pure electric future.

Tata Safari EV

Another key launch is the Safari.EV, an electric SUV expected in the coming months. It makes perfect sense from an engineering standpoint—it will borrow its core platform and powertrains from the outgoing Harrier.EV. This model was even previously spotted testing alongside the Sierra.EV. While more time remains before we fully learn about this product, its role in expanding Tata’s electric family is clear.

Tata Tiago.EV Facelift
This year, Tata will also launch the facelifted Tiago.EV. This is the second update for the popular electric hatchback since its 2022 debut. Based on test mule sightings, the new model will get minor design changes and a handful of new features, and the colour palette will likely be revised.

Inside the car, the centre console will be revised and an updated driver’s display is likely to be added. The core mechanicals—the platform and powertrains—will remain unchanged. The e-hatchback will continue to use the proven 19.2kWh and 24kWh battery packs, offering range figures of 223km and 293km, respectively.
70kWh Versions Of Mahindra BE6 & XEV 9e
The BE6 and XEV 9e are selling well in India. Building on that, Mahindra’s third product in the ‘Electric Origin’ range, the XEV 9S, has also witnessed good demand. Now, the carmaker is set to introduce a new battery pack—the 70 kWh battery that debuted on the XEV 9S with a claimed range of 600 km per charge—and is likely to be brought to the BE6 and XEV 9e.

This move will help Mahindra expand its lineup further, catering to more price points and range requirements by offering a sweet mid-spot between the current 59kWh and 79kWh units. Official launch dates for these versions haven’t been shared yet.
