Having followed Toyota’s moves for years, the buzz at the Japan Mobility Show in May 2026 was palpable when they displayed the new Toyota FJ Cruiser. This isn’t just a nostalgic reboot; it’s a modified version built on a robust platform that underpins trusted models like the Fortuner, giving it serious off-road pedigree. It’s called the “Baby Land Cruiser” and is planned to be introduced in major markets, such as India. The excitement turned tangible when the right-hand-drive version was first spotted testing on the public roads of Bangkok, a clear signal that its Asian rollout is in full swing. Notably, this time, the iconic model is getting a genuine global stage.

Toyota FJ Cruiser: Design & Size

The latest pictures show the FJ Cruiser is still heavily camouflaged, but its boxy shape is very distinctive and easily recognisable. It’s Based on a tough, old-school ladder-frame chassis. In India, it will sit below the Fortuner in Toyota’s line-up. Its size is interesting: it will measure 4575 mm long, 1855 mm wide, and 1960 mm tall, with a wheelbase of 2580 mm. Despite being a compact SUV, when launched, it will be the tallest model in the Land Cruiser family.

The Toyota FJ Cruiser’s Expected Kit

Even though it’s draped in heavy camouflage, the new FJ likely won’t surprise us much—it’s expected to closely resemble the model unveiled last year. Knowing Toyota’s style, they’ll carry over those classic signature C-shaped daytime running lamps and matching C-shaped taillamps. The look stays rugged, defined by a rugged front bumper, squared-off wheel arches, conventional door handles, and functional roof rails. Around the rear, the SUV will have a flatter profile topped off with a tailgate-mounted spare wheel sitting above another large bumper.

    Built for Practical Adventures

Stepping back to look at its identity, it’s True this is a practical vehicle. You get a very usable luggage carrying capacity of 765-litres and a generous ground clearance of 215 mm, which promises great capability off the pavement. While the interiors haven’t been revealed in the latest spy image, we can expect it to come with the sleek all-black cabin showcased at the Japan Mobility Show last year.

    A Tech-Focused & Safe Cabin

In terms of cabin features, you can expect the FJ Cruiser to come well-equipped. Up front, there should be a large centrally-mounted touchscreen infotainment unit and a digital driver’s display, controlled by a 3-spoke multi-functional steering wheel. The layout will feel familiar with round AC vents, and comfort is addressed with leatherette seats, among others. For safety and ease, Toyota is packing in multiple airbags, a super helpful 360-degree surround view camera, and modern Level 2 ADAS technology.

    Toyota FJ Cruiser: Expected Powertrain

For the Indian market, Toyota could additionally have an interesting ace up its sleeve. Speculation is strong that for India, the FJ could be offered with modern strong-hybrid and plug-in hybrid powertrains, which would be a major draw for urban buyers wanting efficiency without sacrificing the Land Cruiser name.

Transmission options for the global and Indian models may include both a six-speed automatic and a six-speed manual gearbox. From what we’ve seen in spy shots and based on its heritage, a rugged part-time 4WD system is expected to be standard across all variants, ensuring its go-anywhere capability.

Under the hood, the global new Land Cruiser FJ is widely expected to be powered by a proven 2.7-litre 2TR-FE inline four-cylinder naturally aspirated petrol engine, delivering 161 bhp and 246 Nm of peak torque. This engine is probably matched with a six-speed automatic transmission and a part-time four-wheel-drive setup. Toyota may also offer a more torque-rich 2.8-litre turbo-diesel engine, possibly with a micro-hybrid setup for slightly improved fuel economy.

Toyota FJ Cruiser: Expected India Launch

Looking at the Indian market roadmap, it’s expected that the new Land Cruiser FJ will be launched in India by 2028. In an interesting strategic move, it could become the very first model to roll out of Toyota’s upcoming manufacturing facility in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Maharashtra. When it finally hits the showrooms, the Toyota FJ Cruiser is expected to be priced around ₹30–35 lakh (ex-showroom), positioning it as a premium but accessible offering in the rugged SUV segment.
