Mahindra Vision S SUV: The Expected Launchpad for the New NU_IQ Platform in 2027

Looking ahead to next year, the automotive world is waiting for Mahindra to launch its expected new offering. Based on what we’ve seen, this compact SUV, likely rooted in the Mahindra Vision S concept, could arrive sometime soon and be cleverly positioned below the flagship Scorpio N. From my perspective, this strategy makes perfect sense; it takes the brand’s rugged appeal and packages it into a more accessible, city-sized vehicle without compromising the core identity.

A Closer Look at the Upcoming Mahindra Vision S

Looking at the recent spy images, it’s clear Mahindra is progressing well with a new project. The test mule on the road has a design that’s firmly linked back to the Vision S concept showcased last year. What first drew my attention was its unmistakably upright stance, which looks similar to the Scorpio N. You can see it in the tight overhangs, squared glass areas, and that classic tailgate-mounted spare wheel.

This gives it a proper, traditional SUV silhouette—a bold approach that really distances it from today’s crossover-heavy rivals. Honestly, when I first saw the proportions, I too was part of the speculation that this might be the next-gen Bolero. But these repeated sightings and the design consistency now tell a different story.

This production version is more than just another compact SUV; it looks like Mahindra is preparing to bring something that could reshape its entire lineup when it arrives in 2027. Moving from a stunning concept to a real-world vehicle is always challenging, but the evidence suggest they’re on the right track. This model seems purpose-built to carve out its own space, staying true to a rugged identity in a market that often sacrifices character for compromise.

The Engine Behind the Vision: Platform and Promise

Now, let’s talk about what’s underneath the bodywork. This upcoming SUV is expected to introduce Mahindra’s next-generation NU_IQ monocoque platform. As an enthusiast who follows platform development, this is the real story. This all-new architecture has been developed to support a wide range of futuristic powertrains and different vehicle sizes.

The company has already confirmed that its first product using NU_IQ technology will be available in stores around 2027. Given what we know, this Vision S-derived SUV is now widely seen as the strong contender to be that pioneering model.

This potential is why the Vision S concept made such an impact during its public debut at Mahindra’s Freedom NU event, where it shared the stage with the Vision X, Vision T, and Vision SXT. Among the four, the Vision S stood out for its realistic design and production-ready proportions. The Vision T leaned into hardcore off-road territory, and the Vision X explored a more urban crossover form, but the Vision S appeared engineered from the start to become a mainstream SUV. Its sensible design and the fact it’s logically positioned below the Scorpio N in the lineup always made it the most viable candidate for production.

Inside and Under the Hood: Cabin and Powertrain Clues

Shifting focus to the powertrain, the details still remain under wraps, but the signs point towards a smart multi-engine strategy. Mahindra has already confirmed that both petrol and hybrid options are in the pipeline.

While we’ll have to wait and see whether this model gets the hybrid system, there are strong hints. In the latest test vehicle, an automatic gearbox was seen, and instrument readouts suggested that diesel power could also be evaluated. It looks like they’re keenly borrowed the flexible approach from their successful XUV 3XO playbook.

Inside the cabin, the test vehicles reveal a thoughtful features list. The layout includes a semi-digital instrument cluster with a colour MID and straightforward switchgear, which is great for ease of use. For practicality, there are grab handles for rear passengers. One of the most eye-catching features visible in the test mule is the large panoramic sunroof, which really brightens up the space. From a design perspective, it’s clear they’re aiming for a balance of modern tech and user-friendly functionality.
