Voluntary Recall in India: What Owners Need to Know

BYD India has proactively initiated a voluntary recall for its Seal electric sedan. The move is to address a potential issue with the vehicle’s core component—the high-voltage Blade battery. The company has asked all Seal owners in the country to get in touch with their nearest authorised service centres for a thorough inspection. If necessary, they will receive a free battery replacement.

So, what’s the specific problem? According to service centre technicians, this proactive recall stems from a possible fault in individual cells within the Seal’s battery pack. While the exact number of affected units has not been publicly disclosed, BYD India is taking these significant precautionary measures to ensure complete customer safety and long-term vehicle reliability, which is the responsible approach in such situations.

The Recall Process: Simple, Free, and Convenient

If you’re an owner of the affected Seal, the process is straightforward. You are advised to book appointments at your nearest authorised service centres. During the visit, trained technicians will conduct a thorough On-Board Diagnostics (OBD) check to identify any specific issues with the battery cells. Should a fault be detected, the entire battery pack will be replaced completely free of charge—at no cost to you, the customer.

What if you can’t make it to a service centre? BYD India has thoughtfully arranged for authorised personnel to come to you. They can collect your car and deliver it to the service facility for you. The company has also assured everyone that the entire replacement process is highly efficient. In most cases, vehicles are expected to be returned to their owners on the same day, minimising any inconvenience.

    Model Scope, Specifications, and Context

First, it’s important to clarify the scope: this recall is limited specifically to the Seal model and does not affect any other BYD vehicles currently sold in India. The Seal was launched with two battery pack options: a 61.44 kWh pack and a larger 82.56 kWh unit. It is available in three variants: the Dynamic (Standard Range), the Premium (Extended Range), and the top-tier Performance (All-Wheel Drive). As a premium electric sedan, its prices start at Rs 41 lakh (ex-showroom) and go up to Rs 53.15 lakh (ex-showroom).

The component in question is the Blade battery, a proprietary technology developed by BYD that is widely known for its excellent structural safety and high energy density. This specific recall comes at a critical time when electric vehicle adoption in India is steadily increasing, and all manufacturers are under close scrutiny regarding both safety and overall performance standards. Proactive actions like this are part of establishing long-term trust in a growing market.
