The 2026 model year of the Ducati DesertX has been officially taken off the wraps, and I have to say, as someone who has spent time on both street and dirt, this second generation motorcycle truly stands out. Completely redesigned, the premium off-roader moves away from the traditional powerplant and introduces an entirely, new, lightweight engine architecture that feels responsive whether you’re tackling trails or long stretches of road.

The revised chassis and thorough mechanical overhaul make this heavyweight, off-road machine not just sturdy but thrilling to handle. Ducati clearly aims to cement its place in the competitive, global segment, and the updates are highly anticipated by riders who crave performance and innovation. The combination of drastically updated engineering and adventurous styling makes riding the DesertX feel like an experience that’s both grounded and exhilarating.

    Engine and Performance Upgrade

The heart of the Ducati DesertX has seen a significant transformation with the older, heavier 937cc Testastretta engine now fully retired and replaced by a brand, new, 890cc, V2, 90-degree, liquid-cooled motor. This advanced engine features a bore of 96 mm and a stroke of 61.5 mm, delivering a compression ratio of 13.1:1, producing 110.3 horsepower at 9,000 rpm and 92 Nm of torque at 7,000 rpm. The overall displacement may have a noticeable drop, but the power and delivery are highly refined, making the bike feel completely smooth throughout the rev range.

The six-speed transmission has been reworked with ratios that are shorter for the first four gears, allowing for precise slow-speed clutch control on tricky dirt trails, while the sixth gear is taller for relaxed highway cruising and fuel-efficient rides. Every technical shift and adjustment in the frame complements the motor, making it a highly capable machine for off-road adventures while staying comfortable on the road. The manufacturer has completely sits this setup to ensure the DesertX is not just a brand new bike, but a highly optimized off-road machine.

Ride the All-New Ducati DesertX Like Never Before

The 2026 DesertX moves away from its traditional design, adopting an aluminium monocoque frame where the V2 engine acts as a fully stressed member of the chassis. This architectural change, combined with the lighter block, drastically reduces the overall mass, making the motorcycle tip the scales at a competitive 209 kg wet weight without fuel. Every ride feels more agile and planted thanks to these thoughtful engineering updates.

The suspension system features adjustable, high-performance KYB units, offering 230 mm of travel at the front and 220 mm at the rear for handling rough terrain with ease. Stopping power is handled by Brembo four-piston, radial, monobloc calipers clamping dual 305 mm discs. The off-road wheel setup combines a 21-inch front and an 18-inch rear, cross-spoked and wrapped in Pirelli Scorpion Rally STR rubber, ensuring grip and control on dirt and tarmac alike. Every detail is designed to give riders tips for confident handling across all conditions.

    Rider Comfort and Ergonomics

The engineering team of the Ducati DesertX has paid close attention to rider ergonomics, moving the footpegs slightly backward while shifting the seat and handlebars forward. This creates a more neutral triangle, improving control and balance when standing on rough terrain. The motorcycle now comes with a newly designed 18-litre polymer fuel tank, slimmer between the knees, lowering the mass in the chassis to reduce the center of gravity and prevent a top-heavy feel during slow manoeuvres. The standard height sits at 880 mm, but it can be lowered to 840 mm with an optional low suspension kit, making it more accessible for different riders.

    Electronics and Pricing

The electronics suite is state-of-the-art, managed by a Bosch inertial measurement unit, with a crisp TFT five-inch color display. Riders can choose multiple power modes, enjoy cornering ABS, Ducati Traction Control, wheelie control, and adjustable engine brake control. The current generation model is priced between Rs 18.33 lakh and Rs 23.71 lakh ex-showroom, while buyers should expect the upgraded, 2026 version to carry a premium at local dealership floors later this year.
