Mark your calendars for April, because the third-generation Mercedes CLA is set to make its Indian debut. This is big news, as the three-pointed star is about to launch the fully redesigned C-segment sedan in its first-ever pure electric variant, aptly named the Mercedes CLA Electric.

A year after its global world premiere in Europe, this advanced EV from the renowned European luxury brand aims to change the game. Boasting an impressive WLTP range of nearly 800 kilometres, it directly aims to make range anxiety a thing of the past. This long range, coupled with an 800-volt electric architecture that enables ultra-fast charging, further enhances its everyday usability, making it one of the most compelling new EVs on the horizon.

    Variant Specifications and Performance

Globally, Mercedes-Benz offers the CLA Electric in several trims, including the 200, 250+, and 350 4MATIC variants. Starting with the base, the 200 variant features a rear-mounted motor producing 165 kW (221 hp) and 355 Nm of torque. This setup allows it to accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 7.5 seconds and achieves a top speed of 210 km/h. Its energy comes from a 58 kWh LFP battery pack that delivers a solid WLTP range of 541 kilometres. The charging is also fast, with a maximum charging rate of 200 kW, allowing it to charge from 10% to 80% state of charge in just 20 minutes.

For those wanting more, the 250+ variant upgrades to a more potent rear motor generating 200 kW (268 hp) and 335 Nm, cutting the 0 to 100 km/h sprint time down to 6.7 seconds. It uses a larger 85 kWh NMC battery pack that can be charged at up to 320 kW, with a 10% to 80% session taking about 22 minutes. Most impressively, this increases the WLTP range to a whopping 792 kilometres per the WLTP cycle, truly putting it in a league of its own.

    Top Variant and Aerodynamic Design

The performance-focused 350 4MATIC variant really adds another dimension. It incorporates a low-output front-mounted motor featuring a clever disconnect function that brings all-wheel drive capability on demand. With a total power of 260 kW (349 hp) and 515 Nm of total torque, it hits 0 to 100 km/h in a rapid 4.9 seconds. It uses the same 85 kWh NMC battery pack as the 250+ variant, and despite this significant upgrade in outputs, it still covers an impressive distance of 770 kilometres on a single charge, also per WLTP standards.

    Mercedes CLA Electric

On the outside, the Mercedes CLA Electric truly makes a statement. It flaunts a distinctive faux A-shaped radiator grille featuring 142 illuminated and individually animated chrome-effect stars. The design is complemented by sleek 19-inch alloy wheels, with headlamps and tail lamps featuring intricate star-shaped light guides. All these elements contribute to an exceptionally low drag coefficient of 0.21 Cd, making it one of the most aerodynamic cars in its segment.

Step Inside, and you’re greeted by a vast large one-piece fixed glass roof that provides a nearly unobstructed view upwards, enhancing the sense of space. The tech takes center stage on a sweeping large glass surface attached to the dashboard, which integrates a trio of screens: a 10.25-inch driver information display, a 14-inch central touchscreen, and a separate 14-inch passenger touchscreen.

This dedicated passenger touchscreen can be used for entertainment like cloud gaming and video streaming, alongside the usual infotainment functions. Other premium equipment highlights include comfortable massage front seats, a head-up display, and a powerful 850-watt, 16-speaker Burmester sound system.

As for its arrival, Mercedes-Benz is likely to launch the CLA Electric in India in its most range-focused 250+ variant. It is expected to be priced from around 55 lakh rupees (ex-showroom), positioning it as a cutting-edge yet practical entry into the luxury EV segment.
