Judging by the latest teaser, Mahindra is expected to launch a special edition or a mild facelift for the Thar Roxx in India sooner rather than later.
Judging by the official teaser that just dropped, it’s clear Mahindra isn’t slowing down. They recently introduced the rebranded and more premium version of the XUV 700, now called the XUV 7XO, while the XUV 3XO also made its market debut.
Now, just a few weeks into the new year, the brand appears to be bringing another new model to the store. Looking at their launch rhythm, they often stagger releases to maintain momentum. We can confirm a few details from the teaser’s vibe, but we’ll have to wait and see what Mahindra really has planned this time.
Spy Shots vs. Teaser Clarity: The Shift in Speculation
Now, about those spy shots everyone was talking about. The homegrown manufacturer was often spotted testing what looked like an updated three-door Thar, with many noting it seemed to be taking design inspiration from the Thar Roxx. These prototypes were caught multiple times back in 2025.
Having tracked these test mules myself, I can say the changes turned out to be a rather subtle update for that three-door model. However, the latest teaser can clearly be deciphered to show a five-door Thar, decisively eliminating all speculation about a new three-door Thar for now.

Instead, what we can expect now is more likely a mild cosmetic enhancement for the Thar Roxx. The teaser confirms it’s the bigger, five-door SUV Thar when viewed from the sides. In my view, in addition to being a visual enhancement, this could very well be a special edition. This strategy makes sense, keeping in mind the good reception for previous dark-themed limited editions with restricted production numbers within the broader Mahindra lineup.
Decoding the Teaser: A “Star” Model, Not a Major Makeover
The teaser itself carries the telling line, “The spotlight has found its star,”—a phrase that appears to hint at rather a special star model than a comprehensive facelift. This strongly suggests that Mahindra could be preparing to add a new variant or a limited-spec model. Such a version would likely follow Mahindra’s familiar approach seen with earlier successful black editions, probably featuring a darker exterior colour scheme, blacked-out detailing, and some exclusive badging to set it apart.

On the inside, any Interior updates are expected to be modest. Potentially, we’re looking at revised seat upholstery, unique trim finishes, or special edition garnishes—cosmetic touches while the overall cabin layout and feature set remain unchanged. Alternatively, the teaser could be pointing towards a broader mild facelift planned for 2026. In that scenario, changes are likely to be limited to practical upgrades like an updated infotainment system, refreshed interior materials, and some minor exterior tweaks.
Powertrain Expectations: Will the Thar Roxx Get a New Diesel Engine?
Irrespective of the direction Mahindra takes with this model, major mechanical changes are unlikely. The SUV is widely expected to continue with its existing engine and transmission options. However, one interesting possibility that cannot be completely ruled out is the introduction of the 1.5L diesel engine currently offered in the three-door Thar for the upcoming Roxx variant.
