When Skoda Auto and Volkswagen India Private Limited (SAVWIPL) commenced production of the new Skoda Kushaq at their Chakan plant in Pune, it marked a milestone not just for the brand in India, but for the entire Group’s operations globally. From my experience visiting the plant, the updated SUV embodies the Make in India philosophy, designed for India yet with ambitions to reach the world.

This vision drives the start of a broader product offensive leading into 2026, with the model developed under the INDIA 2.0 strategy specifically for Indian driving conditions. The high localisation, competitive ownership costs, and strong export potential make this pivotal role in SAVWIPL’s growth journey remarkable, showing that careful planning, innovation, and market understanding can turn a domestic SUV into a global contender.

    Advanced Features for Modern Comfort

The new Kushaq stands out in the midsize SUV segment with a range of premium feature additions that elevate both comfort and appeal. From my experience seeing the model firsthand, the segment-first rear seat massage function and panoramic sunroof immediately enhance the driving experience. The 8-speed torque converter automatic transmission gearbox improves drivability and refinement, making the positioning of the SUV even more competitive. On the safety front, the vehicle offers up to 40 active and passive features with 5-star credentials for adult and child occupants, although Skoda has chosen not to include ADAS in this model, focusing instead on core safety and luxury.

    Driving Growth and Global Presence

Company officials have emphasized India’s growing role in Skoda’s global manufacturing ecosystem, and from my visits to the Pune facility, the rapid start of production following the world premiere of the new Kushaq in January 2026 showcases remarkable operational efficiency. Deliveries are scheduled to begin in March 2026, supported by strong pre-booking response, highlighting how SAVWIPL continues to optimize performance across the Group.

The Kushaq has been a key part of SAVWIPL’s locally manufactured portfolio, contributing to 117,000 units sold in 2025 alongside models like Kylaq, Slavia, Taigun, and Virtus. With the sales boost from the new Kylaq, launched early last year, production is now underway, and Skoda aims to build on Kushaq’s established reputation for European driving dynamics, robust build, quality, and solid safety, while expanding its network and reinforcing India’s position as a strategic export hub.

    Variants and Performance Upgrades

The segment-first rear seat massage function in the new Skoda Kushaq, along with front parking sensors and an enhanced audio system featuring amplifier and subwoofer, immediately upgrades cabin comfort and appeal. The Monte Carlo edition adds a sportier character with darkened exterior elements, red grille highlights, exclusive badges, a dual-tone roof, and sequential indicators, while the Prestige grade emphasizes a premium look with chrome detailing, lighter interior shades, and a classic design theme, giving buyers distinct styling choices.

Under the bonnet, familiar turbo petrol engines like the 1.0-litre and 1.5-litre TSI units remain unchanged mechanically, but the larger motor now gains rear disc brakes. Transmission options include a six-speed MT, a newly introduced eight-speed torque converter automatic paired with the smaller engine, and a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox, offering smooth drivability and refinement across variants. Experiencing these upgrades firsthand, it’s clear that Skoda has balanced sporty aesthetics with reliable performance, making the Kushaq a versatile midsize SUV for Indian roads.
